Workout Alone or With A Group?
So you don’t know if you should workout alone or with a
group. Well let me explain...
There are several advantages to being part of an exercise
or weight-loss group.
First, there is the comraderie and motivation you'll get
(and give) to your companions. You'll find you are not
alone, and you will make friends. That’s good for your
mental and spiritual health as well as the physical side of
things. You will see your friends struggling, and they will
see you toiling. It will give you all courage to keep at it
personally, and to encourage your workout buddies.
As a group, you will usually have more access to any
equipment and helpers that you need. On your own, you are
isolated - which isn’t good for you - and you’ve got to
come up with a plan all by yourself and carry it out. That
takes a tremendous amount of self-discipline and
willpower; and if you already have a weight problem, you
have probably discovered already that willpower alone won't
cut the mustard. You need something else.
That's what a committed group of training buddy friends can
provide you with.

More people succeed in getting fit when they do
it in a group, than those who try
to do it alone. |
So go and find yourself an exercise or activity group
and join it. Some community groups are free or have very
little cost, usually a dollar or two to cover the rent of a
meeting hall. Look around to see what’s available to you.
Alternatively, you could team up with a friend and create
something together. At least you can help keep one another
motivated, and that’s more than half the battle.
I used to play martial arts (Judo and Aikido), but now I
have started learning ballroom dancing. It's a challenge,
and a fun social activity as well. My girlfriend was
doubtful at first but now she loves it.
Finding the right group for you will take some work. Expect
that. It will be worth the trouble, and later on you'll be
happy you got off your tail to do it. Network. Ask around.
Make some phone calls. Read the small ads in your
local community newspapers, and maybe even place a small
classified ad yourself.
